About : The History and Activities of NIT SrinagarThe National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, was established in 1960 as the Regional Engineering College, Srinagar. It was one of the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges established in India during the first Five Year Plan. The Regional Engineering College, Srinagar was upgraded as the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar in July, 2003, when it was granted Deemed University status with the approval of University Grants Commission, All India Council of Technical Education and the Government of India.

College Festival - TechvaganzaThe annual 3 day science and technology festival Techvaganza is held in April. There are exhibitions,and a display of technology from all parts of India. The festival is organised, financially managed and conducted entirely by the students of the Institute. The festival receives sponsorship from companies.
Hostel and InfrastructureThe Institute provides boarding facilities to all the students and the faculty members, on the campus. The students also have the option to stay outside the campus as day-scholars. The Institute provides separate hostels for the boys and girls with separate mess facility.
The activity center in one hostel has been covered under the Institute networking project with an internet facility in each room. Other hostels have an internet cafe each.
There is a two storey Medical Unit with 24 hours medical assistance within the campus with a full time doctor and other paramedical staff and an ambulance. Medical lab facilities such as ECG and X-Ray are available in the Medical Unit.
The Institute has a Common Hall, where the students can play indoor games like table tennis, badminton, carroms and chess, watch television and conduct activities like computer gaming competitions. Other facilities are an Activity Centre, a gymnasium, facilities for outdoor games and a playing field with a hand ball court and volley ball court. There are facilities for cricket, football, hockey and tennis.
The Institute has a Maintenance Engineering Centre set up under the Indo-Italian collaboration. The centre will cater to the maintenance engineering needs of the Institute and as the region as a whole in respect of research, consultancy and academics.
Facilities inclue a Central Library and a computer services centre with internet access, as well as the departmental computer centres. Other amenities include Post and Telegraph, Telecom Center, a branch of the Jammu & Kashmir Bank, an ATM, Canteen, Cafeteria, coffee vending machines, stationery shops, general stores, and Co-operative Stores.
