You are here : 2graduate home » Colleges and Universities in Asia » India » NITs - RECs » NIT RaipurNational Institute of Technology, Raipur About : The History and Activities of NIT RaipurThe National Institute of Technology, Raipur (NIT Raipur), formerly known as Government Engineering College, Raipur (GEC, Raipur), is a technical institution funded by the Government of India, located in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.With the aim of harnessing the ample mineral resources in the region and to build a reputed institute devoted to mining and metallurgical engineering, the college was founded in 1956 as The Government College of Mining and Metallurgy with just two engineering disciplines (mining and metallurgy). The institute is one of the oldest of its kind in India. Currently it is one of the 20 National Institutes of Technology, which have been accorded Institute of National Importance status by the NIT Act of the Indian Government. In 1958-59 with the commencement of additional courses in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, the college came to be known as Government College of Engineering and Technology. Later graduate courses in chemical engineering (1965), architecture (1984), electronics (1985), information technology, computer science and technology (2000), biotechnology and biomedical Engineering (2003) were started. Due to its record of performance, it was declared a National Institute of Technology (NIT) by the national government on 1 December 2005. Bio Technology - 40 They also have the Basic Science department of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and also other departments for Master In Computer Application, English and Human values. NIT Raipur follows the reservation policy declared by the Supreme Court of India, by which 27% of positions are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (STs). The institute also manages one additional girls hostel adjacent to campus. A 60-seat girls hostel is under construction adjacent to existing girls hostel within the campus. A plan for construction of a new hostel block for boys is under process. Each hostel is self-contained with amenities such as common room and a dining hall with mess. All the hostel rooms are adequately furnished.
